Diagnosis and Treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy

The diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy includes an evaluation by a physician. This evaluation will include a history of your symptoms, a physical exam, and in some cases diagnostic testing.  Peripheral neuropathy is damage or disease affecting nerves which may impair sensation, movement, gland or organ function, or other aspects of health, depending on the type of nerve affected. This damage can be caused by more than 100 different known diseases.

Peripheral neuropathy is not a disease, but rather a symptom with many potential causes as described above. Diagnosis of underlying cause is obtained through a comprehensive medical history and examination.  Certain tests that may be helpful include blood tests, imaging studies, nerve conduction studies. These will provide sufficient information to identify the cause of the peripheral neuropathy.

Common Symptoms can include:

  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Cramping
  • Burning
  • Pain (may be there all the time or may come and go, like shooting or stabbing pain)
  • Not being able to feel things that are touched
  • Not being able to sense cold or heat
  • Sensitivity to cold or heat or touch
  • Feeling off balance
  • Having trouble walking
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation

Causes of Peripheral Neuropathy

There are many causes of peripheral neuropathy, but the most common are:

  • Diabetes
  • Herniated or bulging disc
  • B12 Deficiency
  • Alcoholism
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals – chemotherapy, Agent Orange, industrial chemicals
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Hereditary Disorders

Link Between Peripheral Neuropathy and Cancer

Cancer treatments are meant to kill cancer cells, but a side-effect is that normal cells can be damaged or killed too. When chemotherapy damages peripheral nerves, it is called chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, or CIPN. Other types of cancer treatments can also cause it.

Conventional Treatments for Neuropathy

Conventional treatments, such as medication, for neuropathy have caused patients to become discouraged and frustrated with the temporary relief and worsening condition.  If you are receiving the typical treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy (medications and splints), you are covering up your numbness, burning and/or tingling while at the same time watching your health decline.

Pills for neuropathy can cause dangerous side effects which can cause liver failure, kidney damage, gastrointestinal hemorrhage and addiction, while also covering up the warning signs of the disease.  Numbness, burning and tingling are ways of your body telling you something is wrong.  Covering up the symptoms only makes the problem worse.

Surgical intervention is also a conventional treatment method.  In extreme cases, the nerve itself will be destroyed. This often only helps the pain for a brief period of time but unfortunately, most symptoms ultimately wind up worse than before the procedure.
